[Review] German movie - Der Rote Kakadu

A few days ago, I got an invitation to Der Rote Kakadu's -English title: The Red Cockatoo- premiere in Paris. The movie has been released back at the beginning of 2006 in Germany (Where you can now find it in DVD), but have had some delays in other countries.

The plot is about a young man (Siggi) who encounters a beautiful girl and poetess (Luise) and shortly after her husband (Wolle). They all become regulars of the "Rote Kakadu" club, a unique place in the city of Dresden with a breeze of freedom, and a gathering place for artists and Rock and Roll lovers.

The story takes place in 1961. It's a period of transition between a centralized regime that promotes soviet culture but still tolerates the western one, to a totalitarian regime, with an all-powerful secret police.

The main characters' interactions evolve with the time line, as the regime becomes more oppressive and the construction of the separation wall gets closer and closer.

Music, and most specifically Rock and Roll, plays a major role in the movie. German youth didn't only considerate as a new fashion, but also as a way of life!

In the last few years, a number of "Ostalgic" movies were released (Ost meaning East in German), most notably "Good Bye Lenin" and "Das Leben der Anderen". Although Der Rote Kakadu doesn't match up to its predecessors in terms of artistic achievement, it remains a sympathetic movie with a nice storyline.
